Regional Online Event (CA-North, NV, UT)

The trend toward larger mid-rise light-frame wood buildings has more designers seeking information on fire resistant detailing. This presentation will introduce Type III construction, then focus on common detailing issues and areas of misunderstanding related to exterior walls and their intersection with rated floor assemblies. Grey areas in the code have led to a variety of detailing practices. However, the upcoming 2024 International Building Code (IBC) clarifies Type III exterior wall intersection detailing allowances and explicitly allows for platform framed construction. These changes in the upcoming code will be reviewed, along with allowable details to meet these specifications. The presentation will also cover potential ramifications of platform framing, such as design considerations for wood shrinkage.

Regional Online Seminar (AK, ID, HI, OR, WA)

This course is intended for project teams who are seeking a full system understanding of the unique design considerations associated with mass timber schools. There are many cases of teams that want to realize the full benefits of mass timber, but, because they base their designs on traditional building practices instead of optimizing them for mass timber, end up with avoidable price premiums. Mass timber is a unique, non-commodity building material and, to lay the groundwork for success, certain critical decisions must be made as early as possible.

This presentation will address critical early decisions that impact cost efficiency and project success, including construction types, fire ratings, column grids, beam and panel spans, acoustics, and MEP integration. We’ll look at example framing options for common classroom and corridor configurations, as well as solutions for long-span roofs in gymnasiums. Design and detailing topics specific to school performance criteria such as acoustics and durability will be discussed. Topics will also include important considerations for preconstruction coordination, project delivery, and interactions between the manufacturer and design/construction teams.

Regional In-Person Seminar (Redmond, WA)

How can architects, engineers and contractors collaborate to meet the growing demand for mass timber buildings? While developers across the country are pursuing mass timber projects, knowledge among AEC professionals is not yet widespread. Firms have varying degrees of familiarity with both the products and practicalities of designing, sourcing, and building a modern mass timber structure, and early adopters continue to play a significant role in educating the rest of the community. This presentation seeks to build on this openness and environment of shared learning, providing an overview of mass timber products, planning, design and implementation to maximize the benefits these buildings can deliver. We’ll also discuss why some mass timber projects face resistance, and how to overcome misconceptions to achieve success. Topics will also include preconstruction coordination and interactions between the manufacturer and design/construction teams, case-based approaches to costing and scheduling, project delivery methods, how to achieve the highest level of efficiency for costs, schedule, and performance, and additional education and training opportunities.

This unique educational event will provide an in-depth look at Redmond Senior & Community Center, a project that reflects years of work with the City of Redmond, Washington to create a new space that meets the community’s needs. Designers of the two-story, 40,000-sf building utilized veneer-based CLT and glulam post-and-beam to create an equitable community space that includes multi-purpose rooms, recreation areas, a classroom, and Kids Zone. Attendees will tour the site with members of the project team, who will share strategies for successful, code-compliant mass timber projects, including insight on design, detailing, and construction techniques utilized throughout the building. The tour format encourages questions and discussion, and attendees can expect to leave with insights on the project’s design, execution, and factors that influenced material and detail selection.
